Bulldog Banana Bites

For about a year and a half, Dave and I have been fostering dogs for a rescue group called All Dog Rescue. It started as a way to volunteer and have a dog in our lives without committing to having a dog of our own.  One day we'll be ready for that, but until then, wayward dogs come into our home, get love, attention, and training and eventually they move on to their forever homes.  I like to think they occasionally think about us and all the belly rubs they suckered us into.

Right now we have Mia, aka Mia Monkey, who is adorable and affectionate.  And Mia loves cookies.  While I can't verify the tastiness of these cookies, I think the fact that Mia would sit pretty every time I picked up the bag and look longingly at me is a testament that the puppy in your life will approve of these treats.

I can, however, verify that I was pleased with the simple ingredients in this recipe and with how quickly they came together.  Often homemade dog treats can get a little complicated in the specialty ingredients, so this recipe from The Poop (seriously, is there a better dog website name?) was perfect from an accessibility standpoint.  Dave got me a dog bone-shaped cookie cutter ages ago, but you can use whatever cutter you or your pup prefer or just cut in circles or bars. (Had I made mine into squirrel shapes, I guarantee Mia would have bit all the heads off first.) So make up a batch of these for your furry friend and you'll be sure to have a very good dog at your feet in no time.

Bulldog Banana Bites

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
1 egg
1/3 cup ripe banana, mashed
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup beef broth or dissolved beef bouillon
1 Tablespoon brown sugar

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and stir until well blended.

Knead dough for 2 minutes on a lightly floured surface.  Roll to abut 1/4 inch thickness.  Use a 2 1/2 inch bone shaped cookie cutter of cutter of your choice to cut into shapes.

Arrange shapes on parchment or Silpat lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 300 degrees F for 30 minutes.

Allow to cool completely.  Store in an airtight container or zip top bag.  These treats also freeze well if you want to divide the batch.

Makes about 4 1/2 dozen dog treats.

Happy Baking,
The Cookie Princess
